MGI Pharma acquired Baltimore-based Guilford Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to further their discovery, development and marketing of products for patients with brain cancer and Parkinson's disease, as well as for stroke victims. Riparius Construction, Inc. was selected as the construction manager for the new 73,000 square foot, three-story administrative and laboratory building. Built on piles, the building is steel frame with composite decks, light gauge metal stud exterior framing with brick veneer and curtail wall skin. Class 100,000 laboratory space is provided for quality control, tissue culture, spectroscopy, analysis, process chemistry, pre-polymer production, drug delivery, medicinal chemistry, formulations, product development, and large-scale synthesis. Laboratories are equipped with fume hoods and are serviced with RO water, nitrogen, compressed air and vacuum air. All laboratories are constructed to meet GMP requirements. Office spaces, conference rooms, computer room, communications, chemical and radioactive waste storage, hydrogenation, air locks, glass wash areas, shipping and receiving support laboratory functions.
